Abu Simbel is important enough to deserve deliberate planning, but it should not reduce Aswan to the place where you sleep before an early departure. The two experiences answer different questions. Abu Simbel is a monumental journey into Egypt’s far south; Aswan offers the First Cataract, Philae, islands, granite, Nubian history and a distinctive urban rhythm.
The right method depends on dates, transport, flight schedules when relevant, desired pace and what comes immediately before or after. A same-day onward connection may be technically possible in some circumstances but still create a poor travel day. An overnight Abu Simbel experience changes the rhythm again.
Build Abu Simbel into the itinerary only after protecting the Aswan experiences that matter to you. The final logistics should be confirmed against the actual operating conditions rather than copied from a generic timetable.
